Menus, attributes and ordering links on a Business Profile

How the menu, attribute and action-link fields on a Google Business Profile influence which searches you appear for and whether a guest chooses you.

Categories decide which searches a restaurant is eligible for. The fields below decide what happens next: whether a guest reading the profile can see what you serve, confirm that you suit the occasion, and act without leaving the result.

The menu field

A restaurant profile can carry menu information directly, and Google can also read a menu from the website when it is published as text with the right markup. A menu that exists only as a PDF or a flat image can be opened by a guest but is far weaker as machine-readable content.

  • Publish the menu as HTML text on the website, not only as a downloadable file
  • Keep dish names, sections and prices consistent between website and profile
  • Update seasonal and set menus on the same day they change in the dining room
  • Add a menu link to the profile so the two surfaces agree

Attributes and service options

Attributes describe the venue: outdoor seating, wheelchair accessibility, dog friendliness, dining options, payment methods and similar. Some are set by the owner; others are inferred or contributed. They influence the refinement filters guests use inside Maps.

Attribute groups worth completing in full

Service options

Examples
Dine-in, takeaway, delivery, reservations
Why it matters
Filters out venues that cannot serve the occasion

Accessibility

Examples
Step-free entrance, accessible toilet
Why it matters
Decides the venue for a whole table, not one guest

Amenities

Examples
Outdoor seating, private dining, bar
Why it matters
Matches occasion-led searches

Dining options

Examples
Breakfast, lunch, dinner, dessert
Why it matters
Aligns the venue with the daypart being searched

Payments and planning

Examples
Card payments, booking required
Why it matters
Removes hesitation before arrival

Action links turn a profile view into a measurable interaction. A booking link, an order link and the website link are each recorded separately in profile reporting, which makes them the clearest evidence that visibility is converting.

Keeping the three in step

Menus, attributes and action links fail in the same way: they are set once at launch and then drift away from the operation. Guests notice within a week, and the profile records it in reviews.

A maintenance rhythm that holds

Menu

Review
Monthly
Trigger for an immediate change
Any kitchen price or section change

Attributes and service options

Review
Quarterly
Trigger for an immediate change
Adding delivery, outdoor seating, accessibility works

Ordering and booking links

Review
Monthly
Trigger for an immediate change
Changing provider, or any broken link

Hours, including special hours

Review
Weekly in season
Trigger for an immediate change
Bank holidays, closures, private hires

Third-party ordering links are the most common silent failure: the provider changes a URL, the link keeps resolving to a generic page, and the profile quietly sends guests nowhere. Test it from a phone, not a desktop.

Which of the three deserves attention first

Effort against return

Menu

Effort
Moderate, recurring
Typical return
High: answers the most common pre-booking question

Attributes and service options

Effort
Low, occasional
Typical return
Moderate: filters and reassurance, especially accessibility and dietary

Ordering and booking links

Effort
Low, but must be tested
Typical return
High: this is where intent becomes a cover

If time is limited, test the booking path first, then fix the menu, then work through attributes. A broken booking link wastes every other piece of visibility the restaurant has earned.

Common questions

Should the menu live on the profile or the website?

Both. Publish the menu as readable text on the website and link it from the profile so the two surfaces agree.

Do attributes affect rankings?

They mainly affect eligibility and choice. They decide whether you survive a guest's filter and whether the profile answers the question they came with.

Can I remove an attribute someone else added?

Owner-editable attributes can be corrected in the profile. Contributed or inferred ones cannot be removed directly, but keeping your own answers complete and accurate reduces them.

Which booking link should I use?

Your own booking system wherever possible. Commission-bearing links still convert, but they cost margin and hide the guest record.
